4 Tips on How to Successfully Begin a Plant-Based Lifestyle

Let me start off by listing 4 simple tips that will make a plant-based lifestyle much more realistic.

  • Take it meal by meal

  • MEAL PREP!!

  • Slowly incorporate plant-based meals into your overall diet

  • Have fun with it!

Now let's dig into each of these a little deeper.

It is no secret that cooking plant-based meals require more effort and planning, but with the right mindset and time management, it is possible! Taking it meal by meal will allow you to not overwhelm yourself with the amount of prep and cook time each meal takes. I would recommend incorporating plant-based breakfasts first. Most recipes such as oatmeal, smoothies, muffins, and veggie scrambles are very simple and require minimal effort. Once you have mastered breakfast, try adding more plant-based lunches, then dinners. This method will allow you to figure out what works best for you on a smaller scale, and then once you have mastered one type of meal, you're equipped to challenge yourself with the next.

I believe meal prep is the most important thing when it comes to a plant-based lifestyle. Because the amount of prep time for most plant-based recipes is extensive, spending time preparing ingredients for your upcoming meals will make the process a whole lot easier. Personally, I spend about an hour every Sunday cutting vegetables, measuring out spices, and sometimes even making sauces for the meals I have planned that week. When it comes time for me to eat or cook my recipes, the ingredients are all ready to go. As you incorporate more and more recipes into your diet, meal prep will become an essential part of efficiency in the kitchen. It's best to figure out a system early.

Building off my last point, figuring out a system that works with your life is crucial for success. Slowly incorporating different plant-based meals into your diet allows you to play around and see what type of recipes you like and what is realistic for you're cooking level. I would suggest mastering one skill at a time. Begin simple, starting with recipes that call for store-bought sauces and/or substituting store-bought sauces for homemade ones and using frozen pre-made items. Then, once you feel comfortable, venture out and try a few homemade recipes. From there it's all up to you based on what you feel comfortable with. I personally love making my own sauces because it allows me to change up the flavor every time I make it based on what I'm feeling like that week. This way cooking never gets boring!

This brings me to my last point, have fun with it! A plant-based lifestyle is centered around holistic health. It is not meant to cause any additional stress to your life. At first, it may seem a little overwhelming (what new things aren't), but after some practice and determination, you'll become a pro in the kitchen. One of the things I love about a plant-based diet is the diverse options. The amount of vegetables, seeds, roots, spices, etc. is endless. There is always a substitute for something. With this in mind, give yourself permission to play around with different foods. The options are unlimited. Have fun with it!
